Pilchard herpesvirus detected in South African sardine die-offs
Thousands of dead sardines washed ashore near Gqeberha last week after pilchard herpesvirus was confirmed in South African waters in July. Samples from Saldanha Bay, Cape Canyon, Elands Bay and Gansbaai all came back positive, with genetic sequencing revealing over 99 per cent similarity to the Australian outbreak strain. The Western Cape coast had experienced a comparable die-off weeks before.
