Merkel urges Germans to defend democracy as far-right AfD leads in state polls

Former Chancellor Angela Merkel called on voters to stand up for democracy at a Berlin event, one week before Saxony-Anhalt state elections where the far-right AfD leads the polls. Merkel said the party has grown from a regional force in the east to a phenomenon spanning all of Germany.
