South Africa road crash kills 21 in Western Cape

1 h agoA head-on collision between two minibus taxis and a subsequent impact from an SUV killed at least 21 people on a highway in South Africa's Western Cape Province on Sunday night. The crash occurred between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, roughly 380 kilometres east of Cape Town, with several others severely injured.

2 h agoA Russian drone struck a Warsaw-bound train near the Ukraine-Poland border shortly after a train carrying EU officials and former British prime minister Boris Johnson passed through the same area. No casualties were reported. Poland and Ukraine denounced the strike as an escalation.

5 h agoPrime Minister Mark Carney said Canada wants to build a "unique alliance" with the EU but without becoming a member of the bloc. The EU is said to be open to granting Canada a previously nonexistent category of associate member status.

5 h agoNorth Carolina-based 21 Air had flown packages for Amazon since 2024. The aircraft overran the runway by about 1,300 feet while landing at Miami International Airport.

6 h agoIsraeli forces have withdrawn from the Ali al-Tahir ridge in southern Lebanon following the destruction of an underground tunnel complex used by Hezbollah's Badr unit. Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military will remain in the broader security zone and will target anyone who approaches the ridge, and that Israel will not leave the area until Hezbollah is disarmed.

7 h agoA newly unveiled 8-foot statue of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was spray-painted red at Turning Point USA headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, days after its installation to mark one year since his death. A nearby memorial poster and a sign at the statue's base were also defaced, with the word "Jesus" replaced by "Satan" on the inscription.

Saudi authorities posted images showing destruction in Jazan province from what they attributed to Houthi militants, who claimed responsibility for a separate attack on a military installation nearby.

9 h agoAmazon said it was suspending its use of cargo carrier 21 Air after one of its Amazon-branded aircraft crashed on landing in Miami on September 6, killing five people. The 21 Air-operated jet overshot the runway and hit several vehicles.

10 h agoOn Sunday, Russian drones hit a Warsaw-bound train and a frontier checkpoint close to the Polish border, drawing condemnation from Ukraine and Poland as a dangerous escalation. At a nearby border station around the time of the attack stood two prominent Western visitors: former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and David Petraeus, who previously led the CIA.
