The plant, Europe's largest with six reactors, relies on diesel generators to cool nuclear fuel when external power links are down.

The Virgo Transport 8 had departed from Surabaya bound for Banjarmasin when it ran into the storm. Rescuers evacuated 103 people, one of whom died, and deployed teams, ships and a helicopter to search for the 140 still missing.

One person has been confirmed dead, 15 survivors accounted for, and more than 30 remain missing. Vanuatu's prime minister's office attributed the loss to strong winds, unheeded marine warnings and possible vessel overloading.

The British navy-affiliated agency UKMTO said a projectile hit the ship, with damage and crew status unknown. The report comes after Saudi Arabia temporarily closed its East-West pipeline following a drone attack that Baghdad and Riyadh said originated in Iraq.
