Vanuatu ferry sinks in rough seas; one dead, 30+ missing

28 min agoOver 240 passengers were aboard the Virgo Transport 8 when it went silent Sunday while crossing the Java Sea between Surabaya and Banjarmasin. The vessel lost radio contact about 148 kilometers short of its destination, triggering a rescue operation. No casualties have been reported so far.

1 h agoThe MV Matui sank in rough seas on Friday while travelling between the islands of Santo and Ambae with more than 40 passengers and crew aboard. One person has been confirmed dead, 15 survivors accounted for, and more than 30 remain missing. Vanuatu's prime minister's office attributed the loss to strong winds, unheeded marine warnings and possible vessel overloading.

1 h agoMaritime trackers received reports of an attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. The British navy-affiliated agency UKMTO said a projectile hit the ship, with damage and crew status unknown. The report comes after Saudi Arabia temporarily closed its East-West pipeline following a drone attack that Baghdad and Riyadh said originated in Iraq.

3 h agoUkraine's president offered to meet Russia's leader at the G20 summit in Miami to advance talks on ending the war. The Kremlin rejected the proposal, saying Zelensky should travel to Moscow if he wants to meet Putin, and added it had not yet decided whether Putin would attend the summit.

10 h agoRussian airstrikes across multiple Ukrainian regions on Saturday killed six people and injured dozens, damaging residential buildings and infrastructure. In the Odesa region alone, 37 people including an infant were injured in overnight attacks, with two people reported missing. The governor of Zhytomyr region said a Russian strike on a grocery store in the town of Zvyahel killed two people.

The Kremlin rejected the proposal, saying it preferred to meet in Moscow. Russia said it was prepared to resume negotiations with Ukraine but would not halt military operations during talks.
