New Mexico court fines lawyer for submitting ChatGPT-fabricated testimony in murder appeal

A defense attorney in New Mexico was fined $5,000 and held in contempt after submitting a brief containing false police testimony and fabricated witnesses generated by ChatGPT. The state's highest court said it will refer the lawyer, Stephen Aarons, to an attorney disciplinary board, citing his failure to verify the accuracy of the filing in his client's murder conviction appeal.
