Bessent signals strong chance of BOJ rate hike in September to strengthen yen

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Japan's government and central bank are likely to act toward a stronger yen, with a Bank of Japan interest rate increase in September appearing probable. Bessent met BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda on Sunday and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama on Monday, calling for further rate hikes and clearer signals on fiscal sustainability.
