Nepal flood death toll mounts as rescue crews search for hundreds trapped in tunnels

Flash floods struck northern Nepal on August 26, with waves of freezing water and debris sweeping through villages. A school principal evacuated 900 students before the building was destroyed, while authorities reported 933 workers missing in hydroelectric facility tunnels. Nepal police warned against consuming fish and river foods swept by floodwaters due to contamination from chemicals, waste and human remains.
