Tokyo seeks record 8.9 trillion yen in defence spending to bolster AI capabilities
Japan's defence ministry on Monday put forward its largest-ever budget request of 8.9 trillion yen, equivalent to US$55.6 billion, as the nation moves to harness artificial intelligence for faster military decision-making. The proposal could ultimately swell to 10 trillion yen and prioritizes AI systems, inexpensive drones, long-range missiles and hypersonic weapons launched from beneath the sea.
