Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland sign independence accord

2 h agoLeaders from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland—John Swinney of the SNP, Rhun ap Iorwerth of Plaid Cymru, and Michelle O'Neill of Sinn Féin—signed a joint memorandum Monday in Cardiff asserting the right to self-determination and stating no Westminster government has the right to block democracy. They said the future of their nations lies in the European Union.

2 h agoLudek Miklosko, the former West Ham and QPR goalkeeper, has died at the age of 64 following a battle with cancer. Miklosko played 373 times for West Ham from 1990 and won 42 international caps for Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic.

4 h agoA head-on collision between two minibus taxis and a subsequent impact from an SUV killed at least 21 people on a highway in South Africa's Western Cape Province on Sunday night. The crash occurred between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, roughly 380 kilometres east of Cape Town, with several others severely injured.

4 h agoA Russian drone struck a Warsaw-bound train near the Ukraine-Poland border shortly after a train carrying EU officials and former British prime minister Boris Johnson passed through the same area. No casualties were reported. Poland and Ukraine denounced the strike as an escalation.

8 h agoPrime Minister Mark Carney said Canada wants to build a "unique alliance" with the EU but without becoming a member of the bloc. The EU is said to be open to granting Canada a previously nonexistent category of associate member status.

8 h agoNorth Carolina-based 21 Air had flown packages for Amazon since 2024. The aircraft overran the runway by about 1,300 feet while landing at Miami International Airport.

8 h agoIsraeli forces have withdrawn from the Ali al-Tahir ridge in southern Lebanon following the destruction of an underground tunnel complex used by Hezbollah's Badr unit. Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military will remain in the broader security zone and will target anyone who approaches the ridge, and that Israel will not leave the area until Hezbollah is disarmed.

10 h agoA newly unveiled 8-foot statue of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was spray-painted red at Turning Point USA headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, days after its installation to mark one year since his death. A nearby memorial poster and a sign at the statue's base were also defaced, with the word "Jesus" replaced by "Satan" on the inscription.

10 h agoBrent crude jumped to US$108.23 per barrel, up 3.46 per cent, while WTI climbed 3.15 per cent to US$103.20 after Sunday's strikes. Saudi authorities posted images showing destruction in Jazan province from what they attributed to Houthi militants, who claimed responsibility for a separate attack on a military installation nearby.

11 h agoThe Virgo Transport 8 sank in bad weather early Sunday while sailing from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, carrying 243 people. Six died and 129 remain missing; 108 were rescued. More than 600 rescuers were searching on Monday.
