UN votes to shift from Mercator map toward one showing Africa's true size
The United Nations on Friday approved a resolution backing a move away from the 16th-century Mercator projection toward maps that more accurately represent countries' actual size. African states sponsored the resolution to counter perceptions that the continent is peripheral.
